Why people look for apps like Character.AI

Character.AI is a platform for user-made characters. Its App Store listing describes chatting with, calling and creating characters with their own personalities, backstories and voices, and its help centre says messaging is free and unlimited for all users. That breadth is its strength. It is also why some people go looking for something else.

The most common reason is continuity. A platform built around thousands of characters is designed for hopping between conversations, not for one companion who remembers your week. Character.AI’s own help pages describe basic memory and 15 pinned messages on the free plan, with fuller memory on paid plans. If you want a single companion who picks up where you left off, an app designed around one relationship may suit you better.

Other reasons include wanting voice that feels more like a call, wanting pictures of your companion, or wanting an app focused on companionship rather than on a character library. Some people are looking for unfiltered roleplay. We cover that honestly below, because Duple is not that app.

Nomi lists short- and long-term memory plus Shared Notes. Kindroid lets you write a backstory and “implant key memories”, which gives you direct control over what it knows. Replika says it “remembers your people, plans, and goals”, though its help centre lists saving messages to memory as an Ultra feature. Animates says every conversation picks up where the last one ended. Duple saves facts, preferences and moments from your chats as companion memories, which you can reset or delete in the app. These are the developers’ claims, not our measurements.

You want voice

Replika lists voice and video calls, Kindroid lists real-time voice calls, and Animates leads with real-time voice and texting through your messenger app. Nomi lists voice messages. Duple’s App Store listing focuses on text chat.

You want pictures of your companion

Duple is built around a companion’s look: generated selfies, personalised pictures, outfit design and a saved image library. Nomi and Kindroid both list generated selfies, and Replika lists image generation, with selfies on paid plans.

You want to keep paying little or nothing

Where Duple fits, and where it doesn’t

Duple is an iPhone app for creating one companion: you choose their background, appearance and style, chat by text, receive generated selfies, make personalised pictures, design outfits and keep favourite images in one library. It is free to download with a Lite plan. Duple Plus costs $6.99 a week, $19.99 a month or $149.99 a year on the US App Store, and Dokens, Duple’s in-app currency, start at $1.99.

What Duple is not: it is not an unfiltered roleplay app, and it does not offer a library of thousands of user-made characters the way Character.AI does. It is iPhone only and needs iOS 26 or later. If you want explicit roleplay or a big character catalogue, another app will serve you better.

Before you switch

• Your Character.AI chats and characters will not move to another app. Do not assume any app can import them.
• Cancel any c.ai+ or c.ai lite subscription through the App Store if you no longer need it.
• Check the age rating and privacy label of the new app on the App Store in your region.
• Read what the new app means by “memory” and whether you can view, reset or delete what it saves.
• Check whether a trial renews automatically, and at what price.
