AI lover apps on iPhone: what they are and how to choose one

What an AI lover is (and isn’t)

An AI lover is a large-language-model chatbot given a romantic role: girlfriend, boyfriend or partner. It replies in character, keeps some memory of what you tell it, and in most apps can send generated photos. Some add voice calls or short videos.

It isn’t a person. It has no life outside your chats, it agrees with you more than a partner would, and what it “remembers” is whatever the app chooses to store. People use AI lovers for company, flirting, practising conversation, or a low-stakes place to talk at the end of the day. Those are real reasons. Just go in knowing what you are talking to.

“AI lover” overlaps with AI girlfriend apps, AI boyfriend apps and virtual girlfriends. The difference is mostly wording: “lover” is used for both genders and leans romantic rather than friendly.

What 22 App Store results for “ai lover” show

On October 26, 2026 we pulled every result Apple’s US App Store search API returned for “ai lover” (22 apps) and read each title and description.

• 21 of 22 carry Apple’s highest age rating (17+ in Apple’s API). One app is rated 4+.
• It’s split by gender. 7 titles say “girlfriend” and 5 say “boyfriend”. The rest are general companion apps such as Replika, Kindroid and EVA AI.
• Memory is the most common promise. 14 descriptions mention remembering you or memory. 14 mention voice or calls, 12 mention photos or selfies, and only 3 mention video.
• Most are very new or very small. The median app has about 46 US ratings, and 12 of 22 have fewer than 100. Seven have more than 5,000, led by Replika (227,693).
• All 22 are free to download. Paid plans are where the cost is; see our guide to what’s actually free.
• The app literally called “AI Lover” (the first result) describes itself inside its listing as “EchoMate”. Names on the store don’t always match the product.

Duple did not appear in these results; it is a new listing with no US ratings yet.

Can you fall in love with an AI?

People do report real feelings for AI companions, and those feelings are real even though the other side isn’t a person. Researchers and journalists covering the topic, such as Boston University, point to the same limits: an AI doesn’t reciprocate the way a person does, it forgets, and it can make things up.

A healthy way to use an AI lover looks like any other hobby you enjoy: it adds something to your day without replacing the people in it. How to choose an AI lover app: a 6-point check

1. Age rating and content. Almost every result is 17+ and many are built around explicit roleplay. If that’s not what you want, look for an app that says so plainly.
2. Memory you can see and control. “Remembers you” is the most common claim. Check whether you can view, reset or delete what it keeps. See how companion memory works.
3. Create or pick. Some apps give you a catalogue of ready-made characters; others let you create your own. Decide which you want.
4. Voice, pictures and video. 14 of 22 listings mention voice, only 3 mention video. Check which are included and which cost coins.
5. Price and cancelling. Open the in-app purchase list. Weekly plans add up fast. On iPhone, cancel in Settings, then your name, then Subscriptions.
6. Privacy label and developer. The listing’s privacy label shows what data is linked to you. Twelve apps in our snapshot had fewer than 100 ratings, so you may know little about the developer.

How we checked

On October 26, 2026 we queried Apple’s iTunes Search API for “ai lover” (US store, software, 25 results requested, 22 returned). We recorded each app’s title, age rating and US ratings count, and searched each description for memory, voice or calls, photos, video, premium and roleplay. We did not test competitor apps hands-on.
