Free AI girlfriend apps on iPhone: what’s actually free

The four kinds of “free” AI girlfriend

“Free” covers four different deals. Knowing which one you’re looking at tells you where the paywall will be.

On iPhone, the first three dominate. App Store apps also come with an age rating, a privacy label and Apple’s subscription controls, which web sites don’t.

What 21 App Store listings say about “free”

On October 24, 2026 we pulled every result Apple’s US App Store search returned for “ai girlfriend free” (21 apps), then read each description and in-app purchase list.

• All 21 are free to download, and all 21 list in-app purchases. Not one is free with no paid tier.
• None states a number of free messages. Only two describe a free allowance at all: one offers “free messages every day” and another gives “free coins” to start.
• Five say a paid plan unlocks “unlimited” chat or messages. That tells you free chat is capped, without telling you where.
• 11 of 21 descriptions never mention premium, a subscription or a trial, even though every one of them sells something. You find out in the app or in the in-app purchase list.
• 11 of 21 sell a weekly plan. The cheapest weekly plan per app ranges from $2.99 to $9.99, with a median of $6.99. Some list weekly tiers up to $14.99.
• 20 of 21 are rated 17+, and 13 list “Sexual Content or Nudity”. The one exception is rated 17+.
• Many are small. The median app has 865 US ratings; EVA AI Soulmate has the most at 24,662.

Duple did not appear in these results; it is a new listing with no US ratings yet.

What a “free trial” really costs

A trial is the most common way a free AI girlfriend turns into a bill. On the App Store, a trial usually starts an auto-renewing subscription the moment you accept it, and the first charge comes when the trial ends.

One app in our snapshot, Ai Girlfriend: Virtual Chatbot, states “3 day free trial then $4.99/week”. Another lists a plan called “Pro Weekly Free Trial” at $4.99. Here is what weekly prices from the snapshot add up to if you never cancel:

• $2.99 a week (the lowest weekly plan we found): about $155 a year.
• $4.99 a week: about $259 a year.
• $6.99 a week (the median): about $363 a year.
• $9.99 a week: about $519 a year.

13 of the 21 apps also list an annual plan, from $24.99 to $99.99 a year, including 8 of the 11 with weekly plans. If you decide to pay, an annual plan usually costs far less per week than leaving a weekly plan running. Our AI companion app cost guide compares plans across the bigger apps.

Before you tap “Try free”: a 5-point check

1. Open the in-app purchase list. On the App Store listing, scroll to “In-App Purchases”. Weekly plans, coin packs and “Free Trial” plans all show up there, even when the description doesn’t mention them.
2. Find the free limit. If the listing says Premium unlocks “unlimited” messages, free chat is capped. Look for the number in the app or on the developer’s site before you get attached to a conversation. Our AI girlfriend chat guide covers limits, memory and privacy in the chat itself.
3. Read the trial terms. Note how long the trial is and what it becomes. Set a reminder for the day before it ends.
4. Know how to cancel. On iPhone: Settings, then your name, then Subscriptions. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
5. Check the age rating and privacy label. Most of these apps are 17+. The privacy label shows what data is linked to you. Don’t share passwords, financial details or other people’s private information.

Five apps’ free tiers, compared from their listings

These five show the range: a clear free plan, a free daily allowance, a capped free tier, the cheapest weekly plan, and a bigger companion app. Facts are from each US App Store listing on October 24, 2026, plus Duple’s own app. This is not a ranking.

What Duple Lite includes for free

Duple is an AI companion app for iPhone. It’s free to download with a Lite plan, and we would rather tell you the limits up front than have you find them mid-chat. Here is what Lite includes, from the Duple app and our pricing page:

• Up to 2 companions. Create your own; there is no catalogue of ready-made characters.
• Text chat, capped at 150 replies a day. That is the app’s current limit (app configuration, October 15, 2026). Plus removes it.
• Long-term memory. Your companion keeps facts and moments from your chats, and you can reset or delete them. See how memory works.
• Some features are Plus-only. The app shows an “Upgrade to Duple Plus” prompt when you reach one, so you know before you pay.
• Dokens are optional. They pay for extras: in the app on October 15, 2026, adding an outfit showed 100 Dokens and a “Create another” companion slot showed 2,500 Dokens. Packs start at $1.99.

To be fair about it: Duple’s own App Store description doesn’t spell out the Lite limits either. It says some features require Dokens or Duple Plus. That is why we publish them here.

If you pay: Duple Plus is $6.99 a week, $14.99 a month or $69 a year. The annual plan works out to about $1.33 a week, against $363.48 a year if you kept the weekly plan running. Plus raises the roster to 10, 15 or 30 companions and removes the daily cap. Duple companions also send selfies and Live Selfies, short generated videos, and Duple supports custom images and video.

What Duple doesn’t do, on any plan: no voice calls (the mic is for dictation), and it is not built for unfiltered or explicit roleplay. It is rated 17+ and needs iOS 26 or later.

How we checked

On October 24, 2026 we queried Apple’s iTunes Search API for “ai girlfriend free” (US store, software, 25 results requested, 21 returned). The exact phrase “free ai girlfriend” returned no results from the API, so we used the reordered phrase. We then opened each US App Store listing to record its age rating, content descriptors and visible in-app purchases, and searched each description for free allowances, trials, “premium”, “subscription” and “unlimited”. We did not test competitor apps hands-on, so free limits that only appear inside an app are not counted. Duple facts come from the Duple app, its App Store listing and its pricing page.
